MovieScout / CinéScout

Your North Star for Movie Discovery

Finding a movie should be exciting, but Canadians have long relied on fragmented theatre websites and algorithm-driven platforms that prioritize popularity over discovery. Two independent founders set out to change that by creating the first bilingual platform to aggregate every film playing in every theatre across Canada. The challenge was to build a brand that could earn trust in a category dominated by global entertainment companies.

This led to the name MovieScout (CinéScout in French), positioning the platform as a trusted guide rather than another directory. The brand was built around curiosity, confidence and discovery, encouraging exploration instead of endless scrolling.

Rather than relying on familiar movie clichés, the visual identity drew inspiration from the cinema experience itself. Typography echoed the subtle curve of a theatre screen, while a bold icon system referenced scouting badges to reinforce guidance and navigation. Most importantly, the interface was designed to be visually neutral. Unlike entertainment platforms that amplify blockbuster releases through hierarchy, MovieScout gives independent Canadian films and major studio releases equal visual presence, allowing audiences to decide what deserves attention. English and French identities were developed simultaneously to ensure an equally authentic experience for both audiences.

By positioning the platform as a trusted scout rather than a listings aggregator, design created the reason to believe in an entirely new service. More than launching a brand, it changed how Canadians discover movies, creating a more equitable platform that champions Canadian and independent cinema alongside Hollywood releases.
