Calgary Foundation

Through a different lens

Each year, Calgary Foundation’s Quality of Life report surveys thousands of Calgarians to measure the health of the city. The 2025 findings revealed a complex reality: experiences of Calgary differed dramatically based on income, age, gender, race and housing status. The challenge was to transform dense community research into a publication that people would engage with, not just read.

The defining insight was simple: there isn’t one Calgary.
Every resident experiences a different version of the city.

This idea became the foundation of the report’s editorial strategy. Rather than presenting statistics as isolated facts, the publication invited readers to experience Calgary from perspectives beyond their own. Bold headlines, layered photography, oversized typography and data visualization worked together to reveal complexity instead of simplifying it. A restrained palette and editorial design elevated the report beyond a traditional institutional publication.

The design embodied its central concept through moments of concealment and discovery. A die-cut cover partially obscured the title, while layered layouts, interrupted typography and page-turn reveals encouraged readers to actively uncover the story. Rather than illustrating the research, the design made readers experience the act of looking beyond first impressions.

The result was a community report that achieved the highest level of media attention in the publication's history. Following its launch at Calgary Foundation's Vital City event, it generated 15 media stories, including coverage from CTV, Global, CityNews and the Calgary Herald. The report also achieved over 400,000 digital impressions and the digital version garnered over 4500 views reaching policymakers, donors, nonprofits and community leaders across the city.

More importantly, the publication became an enduring reference for organizations shaping policy, funding priorities and community investment. By transforming research into an immersive editorial experience, Through a Different Lens demonstrated that thoughtful design can deepen engagement, expand reach and inspire meaningful civic conversation.
